Five Themes of Geography -- everything in geography relates to one of the themes. Many geographic concepts fit into multiple themes.
LOCATION
Where something is.
Absolute -- exactly where it is using coordinates or address Relative -- relate where it is to another location |
PLACE
Describes location -- what is it like?
Human -- use man-made things to describe Physical -- describe using natural things |
INTERACTION
How people and the earth affect each other
We impact the earth and it has an impact on us -- either positive or negative |
MOVEMENT REGION
People, goods, ideas move from one location to another.
From where did your ancestors move to get here? Where were your shoes made? How about what you ate for breakfast today? Was it grown or made here? |
Locations with common characteristics are in the same region. Regions can change with the characteristics or criteria one chooses. Areas can be in more than one region (Maryland is in the Appalachian Mountain Region and in the Atlantic Coast Region as well)
